Beyond the Map - The theme of exploration is presented on this website thanks to a partnership between Zero One Design and the Maritime Museum of British Columbia as well as a number of additional museums, historians, academics, and students. Supported by the Department of Canadian Heritage, this site is part of the Virtual Museums of Canada project

Beyond the Map looks at what exploration and discovery mean in the history of the Pacific Northwest. The website tells the story of indigenous people who explored, lived in and travelled around the Pacific coast more than 5,000 years ago as well as their European counterparts from the 18^th century. Understanding the hardships and challenges that these explorers faced is difficult from a modern perspective. Accounts of the events are written in an archaic style and the instruments and tools explorers used have no context for the 21^st century reader. Zero One's challenge, then, was to bring this history alive and specifically to encourage a young audience to travel beyond the map.

Zero One designed this site such that a reader can either move through the site chronologically along a timeline or use the menus to navigate by theme or place. In most sections, when the narrative text becomes academic or heavy, the viewer can mix it up by watching video footage of experts discussing aspects of exploration. Interactive maps can be launched that show the routes taken by a particular explorer and these stories are augmented by museum images such as a suit of armour, a captain's uniform, a sea chest, and several maps and charts. A multi-media game makes the site interesting to a youth audience and Beyond the Map includes a chat room for discussions. Zero One's sailing game demonstrates the complexity of navigation, wind, and competition with other explorers, by making the player sail his or her ships into harbour by manipulating the wind and power of each ship.
